Frequently Asked Questions
What is the age minimum?
18. But there is no cap on age.
What is the time commitment?
Practices are two days a week on Mondays and Thursdays at Southwest Indoor Soccer near Beltway 8 and Highway 59 in Stafford, TX. Any skater wishing to roster for interleague games must attend 70% of available practice sessions. Additionally, each skater is asked to get involved, on some measurable level, in the organizational aspects of the league. For example, those who are able to dedicate more of their time may find that they can take on the responsibilities of a committee head, while others can help the league by flyering or setting up at our events. Practice, meetings, fund-raising, bouts, promoting and planning for events can take a considerable time commitment. We are skater-owned and operated. That means all skaters vote on every major league decision and are invested in the success of YRDG. The only reason this league is successful is due to the dedication and efforts of every single skater to making things happen.
How much does it cost?
The biggest expense of joining roller derby is the equipment. Please check out a practice or two before making the initial investment. Skates & equipment can cost upwards of $300. All skaters are required to pay $50 monthly dues which pay for our practice time. An annual WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) supplemental health insurance is also required which costs $70 per year.
What equipment do I need?
In order to skate with us, you need at minimum: quad speed skates (no inlines!!), indoor wheels, and protective padding. Padding requirements are knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and a helmet. All equipment is required for all practices.
Skates and equipment can be purchased online or at B Trouble Skate Shop located at 10850 S. Wilcrest, Ste. 160, Houston 77099.
I don’t want to derby, but I want to be involved! What can I do?
We always need volunteers and referees (on and off skates). Refs can be 18+, male or female. General volunteers will be needed to help us execute home bouts in the future. Artists are always welcome and encouraged to submit designs for merchandise, posters, and fliers. Please email artwork to firstname.lastname@example.org. Interested volunteers can email us as well to find out how they can help the team.
What if I skate for another team, but want to practice with YRDG?
We do allow other skaters to attend some of our practices with prior approval. Before the first time you attend, you must email us at least three days in advance with your WFTDA number for us to verify it as active. Each time you show up to practice, bring $8 cash, check-in with a Director, and be ready to train. Visiting skaters from out of town (120 miles or more from our training facility) must email us their WFTDA number for verification and may practice with us up to three times at no charge. YRDG reserves the right to close practice to any non-member at anytime.
Do you accept transfers?
Skaters transferring from another league must be at least 18 and have left their past league in good standing. If you are an interested transfer skater please contact us at interleague@
